# New message

> How to write to one or more contacts at once from the «Nuova chat» button: choosing recipients and channels, sending, and what happens afterwards.

«Nuova chat» (New chat) is used to write **the same message to several contacts at once**, choosing for each one which channels it should reach them on. To reply to a conversation that is already open, use the normal writing bar instead ([Writing and sending a message](https://narciso.io/en/docs/scrivere-messaggi/)).

> **Note.** You can only write to contacts who **already have a conversation** in the list ([The conversation list](https://narciso.io/en/docs/elenco-conversazioni/)). There is no field where you can type a new phone number or email address: for a contact you have never heard from, the conversation is created when they write first.

## Opening the writing area

1. In the main list (not inside a folder) click the **+** at the top right of the column, which has the tooltip «Nuova chat».
2. The open conversation closes and the writing header appears on the right, with the cursor already in the recipients field.

If you are looking inside a folder, the third button is the U-shaped arrow («Indietro a Tutti» (Back to All)): first go back to the main list ([Folders](https://narciso.io/en/docs/cartelle/)).

To leave the writing area without sending, simply **click a conversation** in the list: that one opens.

## Choosing the recipients

On the left of the header there is a circle with a figure (it fills with the initials of the first two recipients chosen, plus a «+N» if there are more) and on the right the field **«A: digita nome o email...»** (To: type name or email...).

1. Click in the field, or start typing: the list of contacts opens under the field. As you type, the list narrows to the contacts whose **name** contains the letters typed, regardless of upper or lower case. The field searches **the name only**, not the number or the email.
2. Each row shows a checkbox, the contact's email address or phone in bold, the name below it and, on the right, «**Ultima conv:**» (Last conv:) with the time of the last message.
3. At the end of the row there is **CANALI DISPONIBILI:** (AVAILABLE CHANNELS:) with a small button for each channel on which that contact has **already written in the past** (for example WhatsApp, Instagram, Email). A channel the contact has never used does not appear.
4. Click the small button of the channel you want: it turns **blue** and the contact joins the recipients. You can choose **more than one channel** for the same contact: the message goes out on each. Clicking a blue channel again removes it; when the last channel is removed, the contact leaves the recipients.

A contact who writes on several channels and has a single row ([The conversation list](https://narciso.io/en/docs/elenco-conversazioni/)) shows all their channels; the message goes out on the chat of each channel chosen. With only one WhatsApp account connected, the channel name is simply «WhatsApp»; with two accounts they are told apart as WhatsApp Personale and WhatsApp Aziendale ([Comunicazioni settings](https://narciso.io/en/docs/impostazioni-comunicazioni/)).

### If you click the row instead of the channel

If you click a point of the row that is not a small button, the list scrolls to centre the row and the channels box **lights up**, with a dark speech bubble: «Per selezionare un destinatario, definisci quali canali di comunicazione vuoi usare per contattarlo.» (To select a recipient, define which communication channels you want to use to contact them.). The buttons not yet chosen pulse. The box stays highlighted for about **6 seconds** (there is a small circle that empties); a click on the background closes it sooner. A recipient is always chosen through a channel: the checkbox on the left only shows who has already been chosen.

> **Note.** The **i** icon next to the address only shows a message: «Apertura scheda contatto per…» (Opening contact record for…) if the contact is linked to a client, or «Nessuna scheda utente associata a questo contatto» (No user record associated with this contact). It does not open any record. To see the record, open the conversation ([Linking a conversation to a client or a supplier](https://narciso.io/en/docs/collegare-a-un-cliente/)).

### Finding a contact who does not appear

The list of suggestions contains the conversations **already loaded** in the column on the left. Older ones are loaded as you scroll the list ([The conversation list](https://narciso.io/en/docs/elenco-conversazioni/)). If a contact is not there, close the writing area, search for the contact with the magnifying glass of the column, and after making them appear, reopen «Nuova chat».

### The recipients chosen

Each recipient becomes a **label** (name, or email or phone if the name is missing) with an **×** to remove it. Under the field, «**via WhatsApp, Email**» appears, with the channels chosen, or, while there is nobody, «Seleziona i contatti e i canali desiderati» (Select the contacts and channels you want).

With the keyboard, while the field is empty:

| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Freccia sinistra** (Left arrow) | Highlights (in blue) the last label, then the previous ones |
| **Freccia destra** (Right arrow) | Moves the highlight to the right; past the last one it goes back to the field |
| **Backspace** | If a label is highlighted it removes it; otherwise it removes the **last** one |
| **Canc** (Delete) | Removes the highlighted label |

The list of contacts closes when you click outside the header.

## Writing and sending

Below, the writing bar is the normal one ([Writing and sending a message](https://narciso.io/en/docs/scrivere-messaggi/)): text, **emoji**, attachments with the paperclip or dragged onto the chat, **Invio** (Enter) to send. With a few differences:

- the rich email editor does not appear, and the text goes out as plain text;
- **GIFs** are not sent: choosing a GIF does nothing;
- attachments are checked on sending against **all** the channels chosen: it is enough for a file to be unsuitable for **just one** for the error to appear and nothing to be sent ([Writing and sending a message](https://narciso.io/en/docs/scrivere-messaggi/)).

When you press Enter:

1. If there is no recipient, «Seleziona almeno un destinatario per inviare il messaggio» (Select at least one recipient to send the message) appears.
2. If one of the chosen channels is **disconnected** (WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or Telegram), the red error «Impossibile inviare il messaggio perché il tuo account … risulta disconnesso.» (Unable to send the message because your account … is disconnected.) appears with the **Riconnetti** (Reconnect) button, and **nothing is sent**, not even to the other recipients.
3. If the files exceed the limits of the channels or of the email mailbox, the warning appears and the message is not sent.
4. Otherwise the text and the attachments are cleared, and the message goes out **to each recipient and on each chosen channel**, one after the other. Attachments are uploaded only once per channel.

Each message appears immediately in the recipient's chat with the sending-in-progress indicator, then with the ticks ([Reading messages](https://narciso.io/en/docs/leggere-messaggi/)).

### After sending

The writing area closes and the **chat of the first recipient** chosen opens. The other chats can be seen from the list: their row moves to the top with the preview of the message.

If sending to a recipient fails, that message stays in their chat as a grey **unsent** bubble ([Reading messages](https://narciso.io/en/docs/leggere-messaggi/)) and has to be written again from there, because there is no «Riprova» (Retry) button; the other recipients are not stopped. There is no summary: it is a good idea to check in the list that all the rows have the message with the ticks. If the server gives the reason, the error «Invio non riuscito: …» (Sending failed: …) also appears (for example when the contact has been blocked, [Muting, banning and deleting a conversation](https://narciso.io/en/docs/gestire-conversazioni/)).

## What to do if...

| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| The contact does not appear among the suggestions | The field searches the name only and only among the loaded chats: try with part of the name, or scroll the list on the left |
| A channel is not among the small buttons | The contact has never used it: the message can only be sent on the channels on which they have already written |
| «Risulta disconnesso» (Is disconnected) | Press **Riconnetti**, or remove that channel from the recipients |
| The GIF does not go out | Open the contact's chat and send it from there |
| I chose the contact but not the channel | The contact is not among the recipients until you click at least one channel |
